RULES 2009
1. ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all Connecticut public school and private school string players who are residents of, or study in New Haven County and are thirteen (13) to eighteen (18) years of age. Applicants must have reached their thirteenth birthday, but not have reached their nineteenth birthday by the date of the competition.
2. MUSIC SELECTION: Contestants must be prepared to perform from memory: a movement of a concerto for a string instrument. Total performance time, including tuning, is limited to twelve (12) minutes. Contestants must supply their own accompanists. Extended piano introductions and transition passages are to be omitted.
3. COMPETITION DATE: June 28, 2009 at 6:00PM. Contestants will be notified of the exact time of their performance. The competition is not open to the public.
4. COMPETITION SITE: The Paul Mellon Arts Center, Recital Hall, Choate Rosemary Hall, 333 Christian Street, Wallingford, CT.
5. DEADLINE: Applications may be obtained from your high school or private school Music Director or from the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra, Paul Mellon Arts Center, 333 Christian Street, Wallingford, CT 06492, Telephone (203 - 697 - 2261) and must be submitted no later than June 5, 2006. No exceptions will be granted.
6. RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: Two letters of recommendation must accompany the application. One of the letters must be from your private string teacher.
7. ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable entry fee of $50.00 must be submitted with the application. Checks should be made payable to Wallingford Symphony Orchestra.
8. CONTESTANT SELECTION AND AWARD DECISIONS: On the day of the competition, a panel of three judges, selected from Connecticut colleges, universities, music schools and major orchestras, will adjudicate and select the three prize winners. Each student will receive a written evaluation from each of the three judges. All judge's decisions will be final.
9. PRIZE AWARDS: First Prize: $500.00; Second Prize $250.00; Third Prize $125.00. The first prize winner will perform with the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra during the 2009 -2010 season. The Second and Third Prize winners will be acknowledged at the WSO concert. The first prize winner will not be eligible for subsequent Polly Shulga Noonan Wallingford Symphony Orchestra Young String Player Competitions.
